The people who should be making these decisions are those with a deep understanding of desert ecology, training in equine health and genetics, and years of direct experience observing the Salt River horses on the ground. They must be able to integrate data with lived knowledge, balancing scientific evidence with the practical realities of this herdâs unique situation. And just as critically, they must have established working relationships with academic experts, range scientists, and government officials. Without those partnerships, no one can make credible or responsible decisions for this herd.
Only decision-makers with that combination of expertise, experience, and trusted connections can chart a path that secures the herdâs long-term survival.
If the Salt River horses are to survive and flourish for generations to come, the decisions must rest with those who are guided by science, grounded in reality, and committed to the long-term well-being of both the horses and the river. Anything less puts them all at risk.
