Meet Faith
In this post, we honor Faith, a mare many people may recognize today as one of the mares in Rascal’s band.

Her Place in the Herd Today
For many followers of the Salt River horses, Rascal needs little introduction. Known for his bold personality, confidence, and unmistakable presence, Rascal spent years as a bachelor stallion before successfully establishing his own band.
Rascal’s band now includes Faith. While Rascal often attracts much of the attention, every successful band depends upon the mares within it—and Faith brings with her an important history within the Salt River herd.
What Faith Can Teach Us
Much of the public attention surrounding wild horses focuses on stallions. That is understandable. Stallions like Rascal are highly visible, charismatic, and often easy to recognize.
Yet decades of research on horse behavior suggest that mares frequently play the leading role in the daily life of a band. When we watch a stallion standing proudly beside his mares, it is easy to assume he is the one making all the decisions. The science of horse behavior suggests a more complicated story—one in which mares like Faith often play a central role in guiding the lives of the horses around them.
In many ways, mares serve as the social memory of the herd.
They remember seasonal movement patterns. They pass knowledge to younger horses. They help maintain the social bonds that hold a band together. While the stallion may stand at the edge of the group watching for danger, it is the mares who quietly guide the band’s day-to-day decisions.
Why She Matters
The history of the Salt River herd is often told through famous stallions, but it is equally a story of mares whose influence spans generations.
This is why horses like Faith deserve a Tuesday Tribute. Their influence is not always dramatic, but it is often profound. While stallions may capture our attention, mares like Faith help shape the future of the herd.
