Flame Skimmer — Built for Control
Along the Salt River, you’ll see these bright orange dragonflies holding to the same stems along the edge of the water.

🧭 Natural History
Flame skimmers work the slower sections of the river—back eddies, shallow margins, places where insects gather. From a single perch, they make short, controlled flights out over the water, then return to the same exact spot. Many will use that same perch repeatedly, holding a small section of shoreline.
Dragonflies belong to one of the oldest flying insect lineages on Earth, going back more than 300 million years. Their structure—two pairs of wings that move independently, a flexible thorax, and large compound eyes—gives them a high level of control in the air.
That control allows them to hold position, respond quickly to movement, and work a defined stretch of space rather than moving continuously through it.

🌍 Why It Matters
The horses along the Salt River are also the result of a long evolutionary history. Their earliest ancestors evolved in North America, gradually changing over millions of years—from small, multi-toed animals into the single-hoofed runners seen today.
Different path. Same process.
The dragonfly reflects a design that has remained largely stable across deep time. The horse reflects a lineage that changed significantly as environments shifted.
Both are here because those adaptations worked.
