Meet Sapphire
In this post, we honor Sapphire, a mare whose long history connects several generations of the Salt River herd.
Her Story
🧬 Sapphire has been part of the herd for many years and is particularly distinctive because she has complete heterochromia—her two eyes are different colors. One iris is blue because it contains less melanin pigment than the other. Sapphire shares this characteristic with another Salt River horse, Rascal.
Sapphire was a mare in Shadowfax’s band for many years, and together they produced several foals, including Diamond, Gem, and Zircon. Sapphire later gave birth to Jewell (also called Moonstone) around 2020 and has reportedly produced at least eight foals over the course of her life.

Why She Matters
đź“– We often tell the stories of the Salt River horses one horse at a time. Shadowfax and Rascal are two of the most beloved and recognizable horses in the herd, and each has a story that many people know well.
Sapphire reminds us that those individual stories are part of something much larger. Her years in Shadowfax’s band and the foals they produced connect her directly to his story. Her unusual heterochromia creates a very different connection with Rascal.
Follow those connections outward—from Sapphire to Shadowfax, from Sapphire to her offspring, and from one generation to the next—and a much larger picture begins to emerge.
The Salt River horses are not simply a collection of individuals. They are an interconnected web of families, relationships, and generations.
